Gas Lines: What to Do When You Smell Gas

There are times when walking through your house or office, you smell a strange odor. A smell that curdles your nose. Something like rotten eggs perhaps? The first thought is, "What is that?". If you know the smell of gas, you know there's a problem.

- If your dwelling has propane, a near empty tank will expel through the flames, the additive gas companies put into the gas to detect the presence of gas. This is the odor you may smell even if just the pilot is burning. Propane and natural gas are odorless by themselves. If the tank is full, there is most likely a gas leak.

- If you have natural gas and smell gas there is most likely a leak somewhere, as there is no tank involved with this piping. I tell my customers to turn off the gas valve and I will be there very soon. If your a do it yourself-er, an empty spray bottle filled with dish washing soap and water works great. Liberally spray soap and water solution on every threaded connection. If there is a leak present it will blow bubbles at the most minute leak. Turn off gas supply valve and call a licensed mechanical contractor to repair leak.

A person can only work on their own property (meaning you own the house). In commercial buildings, only licensed persons are to work on mechanical systems. There are detectors nowadays that will sound off if the gas leak is detected.

Note: If there is ever a severe gas leak, you should evacuate the house immediately and call for emergency assistance.
